Honeybush Mango from Adagio Teas
Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 10:00AM I've been drinking Honeybush Mango for several months now, but decided to go ahead and put down my thoughts for posterity. On a side note, I'm beginning to realize I've got a lot of tea from Adagio.
First of all, Honeybush is one of those teas that is not really a tea at all, in the sense that it doesn't come from the camellia sinensis plant, the plant from which all true tea originates. Honeybush in fact is a cousin to rooibos, or "red tea", which originates from South Africa. Rooibos and honeybush are both herbal, caffeine-free alternatives to tea. Honeybush tends to have a more of a honey-sweet taste (hence the name) than traditional rooibos.
While honeybush and rooibos may be technically cousins, if the word rooibos actually translates as "red tea", honeybush would fit that same description. The leaves, and also the steeped drink both have a deep reddish shade. Being herbal, and therefore caffeine-free, you don't get any of the bitterness that you get from traditional tea. As a result, I find Honeybush Mango to be very easy to drink. And because it's caffeine-free, I find honeybush to be an excellent evening drink -- I don't have to worry about it keeping me up at night.
As for the taste, I don't know if I could do any better than Adagio's own description:
Our new organic Honeybush Mango tea combines the taste of honey-scented Honeybush with the flavor of perfectly ripened mangoes. Sun princess sold separately. Naturally caffeine-free.
Having somewhat of a sweet tooth, I can tell you that honeybush is decidedly sweeter than some of the rooibos varieties I have tried. And the addition of the mango flavor (one of my favorite flavors in a tea) does nothing but add to the experience. I do have a tin of unflavored honeybush, but honestly find its flavor a bit muted for my tastes. Personally, when I drink an herbal of any kind, I like for it to have a lot of flavor, and the mango is exactly what the honeybush needs to bring out more of its sweetness.
I would really recommend giving Honeybush Mango a try, especially if you're someone who might be wanting to get started in the world of "hot tea" and are either sensitive to or simply don't like the bitterness that a caffeine filled tea brings.
